Florence James Collective, and how it ALL began…

Our story didn’t start in a faraway land…or did it?
Hi, I’m Jesse!
I am the Founder and Creative Director of Florence James Collective and this is how I started my business and the backbones of my journey.
My story started with working at a bowls club on the Gold Coast Australia, shuffling my life from day to late night shifts. Let’s just say life was ‘comfortable’ up until WHAM an opportunity smacked dabbed me in the face!
I was offered a job to be a nanny for a family friend over in London, England! Livin’ the real-life of Posh Spice, shopping on Oxford street, sippin’ tea with the Queen?! This was not an opportunity I was willing to miss. After a short time of living the royal life…I flew back to ‘straya’ (Australia).
Yeah, some things just weren’t meant to be and I just knew it wasn’t for me (if you know, you know right?). The travel bug was still buzzing so I went on another adventure and landed in Vegas baby! And this is where the ‘Photographer Jesse’ Phoenix arose as I instagrammed the entire thing (as you do when you’re on the glitter strip).
*Now don’t laugh at my lack of skills.. but heres an insight to where it started!*
Of course, when the trip came to an end, back to Australia I went. When I landed, I did the usual “hugs and kisses” to say hi to Mum but instead of going home to unpack, I went to the Camera store and became the clerk’s best customer when I said “Give me everything I need to become a photographer!”
Now, ladies and gents, this is where the magic began…
I bought my first camera! 5D Mark IV (and a whole bunch of other gear that I had absolutely no idea how to use), and I practiced shooting on almost EVERYTHING.
My first gig was actually at the bowls club that I used to work at, talk about full circle right? The content was not something I can say I was very proud of, but it gave me the confidence to put myself out there as a photographer.
My next opportunity was brought to me by a friend who tagged me in a facebook post of someone who was looking for a second photographer for a nightclub gig.
This was something now, totally out of my element but I was ready to give anything a go! I followed the photographer around like a little puppy, shadowing his techniques and I quickly learn the ins and outs of event photography. And then…*Pause for dramatic silence* that photographer called me and said “have you heard of Uber eats? They are looking for a photographer and I recommended you” … This was my moment!
Now, the snowball effect is starting to get BIG! As expected my first few attempts at food photography were trial and error, But just like the rest of the opportunities, I learned so much! (Moral to my story, never say no to an opportunity!).
Within a year I had shot over 250 restaurants on the Gold Coast alone and started working in Brisbane for Deliveroo!
Which brings me to talk about how on earth Huzi ended up here as my business and life partner! I met Huzi on an Uber Eats believe it or not (it was for his mums restaurant) and that’s when our little duo of videography and photography started.
We wanted to be “that couple” that explores the world and takes photos together (see cringe worthy content below) but we soon learned that we were much better behind the camera than in front haha!
We have learned so much from each other. As much as I loved being a solo creator, having someone with the same passion and vision was so helpful to scale our business and excel our creativity with so many different projects and industries!
We were swamped with freelance work over the years, and when the massive pandemic swept the world so what did we do? We jumped right into product photography! As a result, Florence James Collective pivoted like many other business and our product photography niche was born!
From what was a dream, we have now become a content creation agency that uses our creative magic to help global businesses grow by creating unique and engaging advertising content like no other. We specialise in producing vibrant, jaw-dropping, and downright epic content while developing brand identities.
I didn’t become a hugely successful photographer overnight (more like 4 years in the making) but my passion for photography and ambition to build something magical in business was the driving force into growing and getting to where we are today.
Yours truly

Florence James Collective, and how it ALL began…

Our story didn’t start in a faraway land…or did it?
Hi, I’m Jesse. I am the Founder and Creative Director of Florence James Collective and this is how I started my business and the backbones of my success…
My story started with working at a bowls club on the Gold Coast Australia. Shuffling my life from day to late night shifts. SO this is where the ‘Photographer Jesse’ Phoenix arose as I instagrammed the entire thing (as you do when you’re on the glitter strip).
*Now don’t laugh at my lack of skills.. but heres an insight to where it started!*
And of course when the trip came to an end, back to Australia, I went. When I landed, I did the usual “hugs and kisses” to say hi to Mum but instead of going home to unpack, I went to the Camera store and became the clerk’s best customer when I said “Give me everything!”
Now, ladies and gents, this is where the magic began…
I bought my first camera! 5D Mark IV (and a whole bunch of other gear that I had absolutely no idea how to use), and I practiced shooting EVERYTHING (beginners this is one piece of advice I stand by!). A cute puppy? whip out the camera, a beautiful sunset? whip out the camera, the most perfect strawberry in the punnet? You guessed it…whip out the camera!
My first gig was actually at the bowls club that I used to work at, talk about full circle right? The content was not something I can say I was very proud of, but it gave me the confidence to put myself out there as a PHOTOGRAPHER!
My next opportunity was brought to me by a friend who tagged me in a facebook post of someone who was looking for a second photographer for a nightclub gig. This was something now, totally out of my element but I was ready! So naturally, I followed the photographer around like a little puppy, shadowing his techniques (not literal shadows, c’mon guys I was a professional at this point lol). I continued to learn the ins and outs of event photography. I put my hand up for pretty much anything as I was so determined to get into the industry. And then…*Pause for dramatic silence* that photographer called me and said “have you heard of Uber eats? They are looking for a photographer and I recommended you” …This was my moment! *happy dance*
Now, the snowball effect is starting to get BIG! As expected my first few attempts at food photography were trial and error (note: uber didn’t even ask to look at my portfolio but thank god they didn’t because I absolutely sucked…temporarily), But just like the rest of the opportunities, I learned SO MUCH! (Moral to my story, never say no to an opportunity!). Within a year I had shot over 250 restaurants on the gold coast alone and started working in Brisbane for Deliveroo! My portfolio quickly grew but I was mainly a food photographer and dabbled in product photography.
Which brings me to talk about how on earth Huzi ended up here as my business and life partner! I met Huzi on an Uber Eats believe it or not (it was for his mums restaurant) and that’s when our little duo of videography and photography started.
We wanted to be “that couple” that explores the world and takes photos together (see cringe worthy content below) but we soon learned that we were much better behind the camera than in front! haha
We have learned so much from each other. As much as I loved being a solo creator, having someone with the same passion and vision was so helpful to scale my business and excel my creativity with so many different projects and industries!
We were swamped with freelance work over the years, and when the massive pandemic swept the world, we jumped right into product photography! As a result, Florence James Collective pivoted like many other business and our product photography niche was born! We’re quite proud of where we’ve gotten to with our expanding company.
We’re just a Brisbane-based Content Creation Agency that uses our creative magic to help global businesses grow by creating delectable, unique, and engaging advertising content like no other. We specialise in producing vibrant, jaw-dropping, and downright epic content while developing brand identities.
So, no, I didn’t become a hugely successful photographer overnight (more like 5 years in the making).  My passion for photography and ambition to not just create but also deliver content was evident. Florence James Collective came about as a result of my desire to learn and challenge myself to be better in this industry.
Yours truly
